HORMONES FOR WEIGHT CONTROL
While there are several hormones for weight control, few are as popular or effective as Leptin. When it was discovered in 1994, leptin changed the course of weight loss forever. Leptin is a powerful hormone that is created in fat cells, and circulates through the bloodstream sending important signals to the brain.
As leptin travels to the brain, it communicates important information about the energy levels in the body. Since the body burns fat for energy, leptin typically provides an energy inventory for the body, letting the brain know there is enough stored caloric energy to function at a normal healthy level; resulting in a normal metabolic process.
Interestingly, as people diet, and reduce their caloric intake, the body decreases the amount of leptin produced. This decrease in leptin production alerts the brain to potential starvation. As a result, the body attempts to restore leptin hormone levels to normal, healthy levels; one way this occurs is through stimulation a nerve, called the vagus nerve, which runs between the brain and abdomen. The vagus nerve is activated when the body senses it needs more energy, resulting in significant hunger – resulting in eating more food. Fortunately, nutritionists have discovered foods and techniques that increase leptin production in as little as 30 seconds a day.
Leptin is also closely connected to the body’s internal reward system. In other words, when leptin hormone levels dip below normal levels, the body views food as more rewarding – making it taste better, so we eat more. This reward symptom dissipates as leptin levels return to normal levels.
Considering leptin is stored in, and released from, fat cells, it would make sense to think the fatter one is, the more weight control hormones one produces and releases. While this theory is true, researcher have discovered that obese people often experience leptin resistance. Leptin resistance, similar to insulin resistance in diabetics, creates a situation where the body is producing tremendous amounts of leptin, saying “there is enough, I am obese, stop!”; but the brain is not receiving the message, and thinks the body is starving. This triggers the vagus nerve and reward system, resulting in an already obese individual to eat more and gain more weight.

Continued research into leptin and hormones for weight control has demonstrated that supplementing with a high-quality leptin supplement bypasses the communication between the fat cells and the brain, sending a fresh, consistent supply of leptin to the brain. The brain is convinced that leptin levels are appropriate, taking the body out of starvation mode, and opening the door to dramatic, consistent weight loss.
