Worst Foods for Digestive Health

By: Sarah Webster

When it comes to digestion our bodies want regularity. Common digestive problems include bloating, cramping, reflux, heartburn, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. These issues can be worrisome and very uncomfortable. Doctors have found that watching what you eat can help aid in the possible elimination of these digestive issues and increase your overall health. Improving your digestive health naturally could simply mean changing the type of foods you eat.

Digestion No-No’s

Because different foods break down at different rates it’s not always necessarily  the types of foods affecting the digestive tract, rather the specific combination of foods. Some food combinations that cause issues in digestion include eating fruits with carbs, dairy with fruit, animal proteins and carbs, and drinking with meals. Once these foods and liquids are mixed the enzymes in the foods cannot be broken down at their natural rate, thus causing fermentation and a slower digestion process.

Other foods by themselves can also cause digestive problems. Some foods to eliminate or reduce include:
Coffee, Tea, and Soft Drinks– Caffeinated beverages can act as a diuretic causing diarrhea and cramping.
Fatty and Fried foods– These foods irritate the stomach, cause heartburn, and acid reflux, the fat can also affect the stool’s color affecting people with irritable bowel syndrome.
Dairy– Dairy can cause issues in people with lactose intolerance such as constipation and bloating.
Alcohol-Alcohol can relax the esophagus sphincter causing reflux.
Corn-The enzymes in corn are not easily digested.
Berries– Tiny seeds can cause problems for people with diverticulitis; these seeds can get trapped in the intestines.

By eliminating or reducing these digestive irritants the digestive tract can begin working the way it should. Other things to consider when looking into your digestive health include not eating enough fiber, eating too late, eating fast and large quantities, and ignoring the urge to go to the bathroom. Constipation, bloating, and cramping can all be reduced when choosing the right foods, the right combinations, and the right amounts.
Foods to Help Digestion

Eliminating certain foods from your diet can increase your overall health and digestive tract issues. But adding certain foods can also help to increase your digestion. Some foods include whole grains, bananas, kimchi, fruit alone, sweet potatoes, ginger, and yogurt. Foods with high levels of probiotics can help aid in better digestion. Combining the correct foods can also keep your digestive track regular. Combining carbohydrates and vegetables, lean meats and non-starchy vegetables, and fruits alone can increase your potential for a healthy digestive system and overall better health.
